为了揭露岩石之令的无能，Ivor使用其自岩石之令带走的命令方块在末影嘉年华制造了凋灵风暴。但是，凋灵风暴并不如其预想的听令，保险用的喷溅药水也因被Axel盗走而未能在凋灵风暴成长前即时破坏命令方块。凋灵风暴失控，开始肆虐主世界。
凋灵风暴随着吸附方块与生物不断成长，并不断追击拿着护身符的Jesse一行人。依照玩家的选择，凋灵风暴会吸走Petra或Gabriel，并使另一位得到凋零病。欣荣镇和红石尼亚也会因Jesse前往而被摧毁。
于Soren加入后，Jesse一行人使用恐怖炸弹将凋灵风暴炸毁。但命令方块分毫未伤，不久后凋灵风暴即以分成三段的形态复活。
Jesse一行人随Ivor前往边境之地拿取命令方块附魔书并制作命令方块武器，集合于Soren的堡垒旁再次试图摧毁凋灵风暴。通过让凋灵风暴注视激怒末影人，末影人将凋灵风暴身上的方块拔开了一个洞口。Jesse与Reuben最终进入凋灵风暴体内，经一番战斗成功使用命令方块武器破坏核心的命令方块，凋灵风暴最终被成功摧毁并掉落了一个下界之星。

凋灵风暴最初的外貌与一般的凋灵类似，但身体包覆著一个命令方块，且会主动吸附周遭的方块。随着吸附各种方块，其身体将不断地增大，头部也将变化成紫色独眼与利牙的样貌，并长出多只触手，周遭则环绕着大量黑色方块。凋灵风暴原本仅有三颗头，在被恐怖炸弹炸成三段后，三颗头分别被炸到一段，并最终各自再长出两颗头，三段共九颗头。
凋灵风暴的力量源于命令方块，只要命令方块未损，凋灵风暴就不会真正死亡。命令方块免疫一切攻击，只能被特制的药水和附有命令方块之力的武器伤害。

根据Ivor的设计，凋灵风暴会不断追逐护身符的持有者，但无法追至下界或末地。在第一章中，其有试图将触手伸入下界门中，结果将下界门扯坏。
凋灵风暴会被烟花火箭的声音和人造建筑吸引注意力，在两度试图摧毁凋灵风暴时皆利用了该行为。

凋灵风暴的紫色独眼会发出牵引光束，射向其注视的方向，将照到的生物与方块群吸上去。该眼睛可以被打破使其无法发出光束。
凋灵风暴的触手会抽打、卷起目标，亦可破坏方块，坚固的黑曜石也无法挡下。凋灵风暴还可以使用其利齿撕咬目标。
类似于原版的凋灵，凋灵风暴的每个头都可以由嘴中射出凋灵之首。凋灵风暴的凋灵之首有着特别的纹理，飞行时背后还接着火焰，其产生的爆炸也会产生火。

大多数主世界的生物――不论动物或怪物――都会尽快地逃离凋灵风暴。末影人为例外，不但可能反道而行，还会因被凋灵风暴的牵引光束照到而认定遭注视并被激怒，瞬移到凋灵风暴身上并拔下方块，足以制造出能进入其体内的洞。
被凋灵风暴攻击乃至吸入体内的生物若未死亡，可能会患“凋零病”。凋零病会使人衰弱，皮肤呈现苍白，并使部分部位出现腐烂的暗紫色。甚者失忆，忘记自己的身份。凋灵风暴不灭，凋零病不解。凋灵风暴被摧毁后，所有症状皆将复原。
